Ingredients

  • 14 oz firm tofu pressed to remove excess water
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika for smoky flavor
  • 1/2 tsp chili flakes adjust for spice level
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 3 Tbsp soy sauce or coconut aminos for soy-free
  • 1 Tbsp sesame oil optional for flavor
  • 1 lime lime for juice and zest

Equipment

  • baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • Mixing bowls
  • spatula or tongs
  • Kitchen towel or paper towels

Method

  1. Wrap the tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels and press with a heavy object for at least 15 minutes to remove excess moisture. This helps it crisp up during roasting.
  2. Once pressed, cut the tofu into 1.5 cm (0.6 inch) cubes or strips, depending on your preference. Aim for even pieces for uniform roasting.
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine smoked paprika, chili flakes, garlic powder, soy sauce, sesame oil, and the juice and zest of a lime. Whisk together until well blended.
  4. Add the tofu pieces to the marinade and gently toss to coat all sides evenly. Let it marinate for 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to penetrate.
  5. Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  6. Arrange the marinated tofu pieces in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each for even roasting.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, turning once halfway through, until the edges are golden brown and slightly charred, and the tofu crackles when pressed.
  8. Remove from the oven and let the tofu rest for 5 minutes. This helps set the texture and finish the flavor development.
  9. Garnish with extra lime juice or chopped cilantro, if desired, and serve hot as a spicy snack or main dish.

Notes

Adjust spice levels by adding more chili flakes or hot sauce. Pressing the tofu thoroughly ensures maximum crispiness. Serve immediately for best texture.
